The First Board Game

Are you surprised to hear that board games are actually a pre-historic form of entertainment? We had board games before we had a written language. So, what was the very first game?. Dice! A small square piece that’s essential in most board games today was the basis of humanity’s oldest games. Most likely crafted from wood and stone, with carved dots in place of painted dots.

The earliest game pieces ever found, might be a series of 49 small and carved painted stones found in Southeast Turkey, near a 5,000 year old burial mound, “Basur Hoyuk”. Very similar pieces have also been found in Syria and Iraq, which include an area called the “Fertile Crescent” which point to board game pieces. This area is comprised of regions around the Nile, Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in the Middle East. The same region we credit for inventing booze, papyrus, breath mints, and calendars, which are also required when planning your game night!

Early Dice

Other early origin dice games were played using flat sticks. The sticks would be pained on one side, and tossed together, and the total of the painted sides that fell face up would be your “roll”. Mesopotamian era dice were made from a variety of different materials, such as carved knuckle bones (who’s knuckle bones? maybe the loser?-scary!), wood, painted stones, and even turtle shells.

Board Games Become a Royal Pastime

The Pharaohs (Kings) of Ancient Egypt were known to enjoy and play board games. A closer glimpse into their culture at that time shows the popularity of a game called Senet. This game had been found in prior Dynasty and First Dynasty burial and tomb sites. Senet is featured in several illustrations from Ancient Egyptian tombs by the time of the New Kingdom in Egypt (1550–1077 BC). The actual playing of the game is still being debated. The Senet board game had a 30 square grid, which consisted of three rows of ten squares. The game pieces included two sets of pawns. The Senet board game, is still made and sold today, although historians are still debating what the rules of the game actually were in 3100 BC.

The Landlord’s Game

One of American’s very first board game designers, was a woman named Lizzie Magie. She created a board game called “The Landlord’s Game”. The game board consisted of a square track with a row of properties around the outside of the board that players could buy. The track had a corner named “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages,” which earned players $100 each time they passed it, four railroads, two utilities and a jail.… Sound familiar?

In 1904 Lizzie Magie invented and patented the game she named “The Landlord’s Game”. She based her game on a system of economic principles created by Henry George and Called “Georgism”. The object of the game board was to illustrate the current practice of “land grabbing” with rich property owners leasing properties at high prices, which would in turn impoverish its tenants.

Lizzie Magie knew that the economic principles she found unfair, would be hard for some people to understand, and even harder for them to understand how to change the unfair situation. She had an idea to create a board game around the “Georgist” ideas that would make the situation easier to understand. Lizzie Magie also hoped that when children played the game, they would see the unfairness, and carry this knowledge into adulthood, and create less corrupt landlord/tenant arrangements.

Monopoly

Lizzie Magie sold her patent for “The Landlords Game” to Parker Brothers, which is now what we know as Monopoly. This game which launched Parker Brothers to become a massive success was originally rejected by them, hmmm perhaps they were the landlords and not the tenants?.

Parker Brothers paid Lizzie Magie $500.00 for her original game. After their success with Monopoly, They went on to produce lots of other successful games, including Risk  Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, and many more.

Board Gaming Becomes a Yearly World Wide Event

And now we come full circle with a popular TV series based around board games called “Table Top”. This web series was created by Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day, and has been a real catalyst for the recent explosion in board gaming.  The show episodes feature Wil Wheaton playing board games with popular TV and web personalities.

The show “TableTop” started out on the Youtube Channel, Geek & Sundry and quickly became its most popular series. Interestingly, the original concept for the show was Wil Wheaton (who’s an avid board gamer) reviewing board games. However, Wil Wheaton knew the best way to show how great games are is to actually play them. His suggestion was a good one, and a very successful idea.

Tabletop’s rapid rise to the top encouraged the team to post a crowdfunding campaign so they could become independent. They were hoping to raise $500,000, and were happily surprised to triple that. Recently they announced the launch of a similar web series, “Titan’s Grave: The Ashes of Vulcan”. This multi-episode show will focus on single role-playing board gaming. Geek & Sundry teamed up with Green Ronin Publishing (creators of several RPG titles, including Dragon Age). Together they created a new game engine they will be using to power their RPG game.

Table Top Games

Game manufacturers who are fortunate to have TableTop feature their game on an episode experience a skyrocket in sales. Tsuro was featured on an episode, and the demand for the game was so great it depleted the publishers stock reserve. Game manufacturers are calling this sales explosion, “The Wheaton Effect”. Many people still think of Monopoly and Risk when they think of board games, and the show’s popularity is starting bring a fresh idea of what gaming is now. Many new people who have not been board game fans, are starting to appreciate the new games that are available. So much so, that manufacturers have had to scramble to produce enough games to cope with the US demand.

The first International Tabletop Day was held in 2013. This event was hosted by Wil and Felicia, and featured guest players from previous episodes. The following year, the event had grown into a worldwide celebration with events in over 80 countries. Many game stores all over the world announce the events and promotions for customer’s participation. Because of these popular events, board gaming is now an official global holiday, with many people participating from countries all over the world. It all started from a small yet popular, Youtube channel.
