I love this quote by Bob Marley. I think everyone will be touched by one of his songs, regardless of their personal music likes and dislikes. His music is catchy and hits the soul.

If you enjoy music, and have an interest in researching where music came from, where it is today, and where it is going, you will find some interesting repeating trends.

You may have heard the Beatles lyric “Eight Days A Week”. It was Ringo Starr who wrote that as a comment on his frantic, rushed, hectic, working schedule and lifestyle. Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon, Rush) made a very good documentary of this period in the bands history. A time when time was crushed, as much as they were by their screaming fans. Watching this film will give you an insiders look at the pop history that is our musical past.

A still from Ron Howard’s Beatles Documentary Eight Days a Week

Ron Howard’s Beatles Documentary starts with the 1962 arrival of their newest band member, Ringo Starr, and ends with their final 1966 live concert. This equals four lifetimes of live performance concerts, edited down into a two hour documentary film.

John Lennon’s line, “We were force-grown, like rhubarb”, is one of the many memorable short comments. This statement rings true to the direction Ron Howard took in showing the growth of the band and its often forced, by others, direction, right thru the 1967 recording of their album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Ron Howard, honestly portrays the media direction as one of an exhilarating, punishing, grueling, showbiz whirl, and the bands often push-back against that.

That is a short snapshot of Ron Howard’s excellent film. It is very hard to make a negative comment about his documentary. He did his research well, working with teams of interviewers, and other researchers to assemble film footage. Some of which was taken from archived concert footage and band member interviews. The archive film was gleamingly restored. Ron Howard also included new conversations with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and a star line-up of celebrity interviews as well.

A few of the celebrity interviews are there to add a nice British flavor to what is mostly a USA centered film, a very nice addition. Richard Curtis makes the comment that he always felt his Rom-Com scripts owe a debt to the Beatles’ early madcap? media personalities.

The Beatles 25 date American Tour began on August 18,1964. They were met at the San Francisco airport by throngs of screaming, shouting fans, who were held back from rushing the band by metal barrier fences.

Beetles Influence

Sigourney Weaver’s interview managed to capture for us the magnitude of the band’s influence on a generation, without having to say much about the phenomenon. Her personal experience attending the 1965 Hollywood Bowl spoke volumes. The grainy, but contemporary news footage gave us a believable scene for her then 12 year old excited and delighted self.

Other than some historical generation defining events like the Kennedy assassination, Ron Howard did not try to tie in lots of historical reference. I think Ron Howard understood that THE BAND was the historical reference.

The phenomenon that was their live appearances – not just the concerts themselves, but also the campy press conference preludes, and the very funny, over the top – fallout – pretty well defines the times with a quirky precision.

Between Gig’s with The Beatles in Ron Howard’s new film

Civil Rights Movement

Band manager, Brian Epstein had included a line in the band’s touring contracts, that the band would not play to segregated crowds. Ron Howard included our mid-century Civil Rights Movement into the documentary.

Global thinker at a very young age, Whoopi Goldberg who had attended the 1965 Shea Stadium Concert had some interesting comments. Whoopi stated that she “never thought of them as “white guys”, and described the band as “colorless”. The documentary could have been better with a few more like minded segments.

Likewise, Ron Howard’s documentary tantalizes us with some of the Beatle’s mischievous sense of humor, but unfortunately glosses through it a little too quickly. The playful, and spontaneous bantering the band directed at the strait-laced reporters was enjoyable to watch. Some of the bands eccentric for that time period, lyrics, may have been influenced by their long-time producer, George Martin. George had worked at one time recording alternative comedy.

Brilliantly, the songs themselves get their due. Some of them are heard in a slightly surprising rendition. For instance, the documentary’s title track is first heard with Lennon and McCartney’s experimental introduction, before moving into its better-known version.

In addition, hearing the tracks played through a cinema sound system, was a real pleasure. Sgt. Pepper’s opening chords, feel like an act of resuscitation, as they literally feel as if they are being slammed into your chest. A great feeling !!

Maybe Ron Howard could address what that record did to bring a new lease on life for the Beatles, and could really make a great followup to his first documentary. It would be appreciated and welcomed by all who loved his “Eight Days a Week” documentary.
