Children (from the womb) to cradle and crib and beyond benefit greatly from hearing us speak. Reading to a baby is a great way for them to hear your voice, and to begin to recognize a larger vocabulary. You will be giving your children the gift of READING which is absolutely a basic need and proven benefit to succeed in all areas of life.

Our own abilities to communicate, write and share information with others is learned from our ability to read. If you have not taken the time to read some children’s books, you are missing out on a wonderful reading experience. I promise you, you are not too old to enjoy children’s books. They are a great gift to give, and you may decide to keep a few for your own coffee table.

I have enjoyed reading, my entire life… and to think it all started with A, B, C….. right now you are reading new information on 6m6r.com, and will want to share that information with others… and that is real easy to do, just give them two letters and two numbers !!

Why Is Reading Important?

Imagine if every sign, every advertisement, every text, every email, everything in print you could not understand? I have experienced this first hand while visiting and living in other countries. But what if you could not read anything in your own language, living in your own country? John Corcoran wrote a book “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read”. John, a very intelligent man, managed to somehow (you will have to read his book) succeed without the ability to read. He graduated High School, and College and went on to become a very well liked High School Teacher, and later on a successful business owner, all without the ability to read.

So, you wonder, if John Corcoran succeeded in life without the ability to read, why is reading so important? If you read John’s book, you will read about the shame, loneliness and fear he experienced before he learned to read. The inability to read makes life harder and much less enjoyable. Reading was a handicap for him that he eventually overcame with  patience, persistence, and determination. He never quit, he never gave up on himself!

Is Reading REALLY that Important?

1. To function in society, the ability to read is a basic survival skill. Suppose you can not read your own medicine prescription bottle? or your child’s prescription bottle?  That could be a very scary thing, with life threatening results. Driving becomes even more of a challenge if you can not read or understand a road or warning sign. I was pulled over for speeding on Canada’s QE3 freeway, not because I wanted to speed, but because I failed to read a sign stating the speed was lowered for a stretch of highway! Glad we have GPS, but following a printed map could have not so funny results if you can’t read it. Day-to-day routines we take for granted become a source of anger, fear, failure and frustration to people who can not read.

2. What kind of job opportunity will you qualify for if you can not read? Imagine if you could not go online, pretty much you could not even apply for a job in today’s job market. Filling out applications online can be difficult even for those of us who speed read!  I can not think of a single well-paying job that does not require the ability to read as part of the job you are expected to perform. Every person no matter how smart, charming or professional looking, will be very limited in the skills they can accomplish without the ability to read.

3.  The mind is a muscle that needs to be worked. Many studies have been done on children and elderly people, and how much they benefit from learning a new language, picking up a musical instrument, and reading. Teaching children or adults to read will help them speak better, and also listen better.  Don’t most of us really enjoy talking? Don’t we all want to be heard?  But how many of us are truly good listeners? Many marriages, jobs and opportunities have been lost because of poor listening skills. Poor listening skills can literally be life threatening in emergency situations. We all need to pay more attention to the person speaking, and really listen to what they are saying. Reading can improve your listening skills.

4. Have you heard the expression self-taught? I am not an attorney, but I managed to write a Supreme Court Brief by googling “How to write a Supreme Court Brief” and researching the article. (any attorney reading this will appreciate the fact that it did take me a week to write!) Anyone who can read can teach themselves to do just about anything. We live in an amazing time where information is available like never before in the history of our planet!, This “information highway” is just incredible, but, if you can not read, you have no vehicle to drive it. I love new things, and discovering new things, and 6m6r.com is true love. Life without the internet, books, and magazines would be hard to imagine, but to someone who can not read, I imagine it would just be hard…. books

Will Reading improve your Imagination?

5. When you read, you can go anywhere in the world, or out of the world! You can experience the life of a celebrity, president, king, hero. The possibilities are truly endless.  People who can’t read, can not experience the joy of imagination to the same extent. It is interesting that the word Amusement comes from two words, “A” meaning (non) and “Muse” meaning (think). Amusement is non-thinking activities like computer games and television. Reading develops the imagination.

6. Reading helps develop creativity. Have some fun while reading to children. Stop every once in awhile and ask them what they think is going to happen next? When you finish the book with them, ask them to tell you if they could think of a better ending, or what would make the story better? If you want to encourage their creative side to shine, ask them to illustrate it with their own drawings. Ask them to make up a different story using the same characters. You can also ask yourself the same questions while you read, and build your own creativity!

Reading Is Fundamental

7. I never really thought much of our reading ability being directly related to our self-image. But it is! Wouldn’t that be a great self-help book to READ!! People who do not read or read poorly often have a low self image of themselves and their abilities. Many times they have a negative mind set, and feel as if the world is against them. They often feel alone as if “everybody else can read”, which isn’t all that true. Negative attitudes and low self esteem can create or add to behavioral problems. They often perform poorly in other areas also, because they can not read and understand the material given to them, and often “give up” trying.

8. Reading is very important to your ability to spell, and to phonics. As we learn to sound out the words we are looking at, spelling becomes easier. Also, reading will help greatly to expand your vocabulary. Words you are seeing for the very first time are stored in your mind for later use. Experiencing how different words are used in other contexts can give us a better understanding of word usage as opposed to looking the word up in a dictionary.

9. I love the saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Ideas written down have changed the destiny of men and nations for better or worse. The flow of ideas both good and bad cannot be stopped. We need to read and research to build on the good ideas and expose the bad ideas before they bring destruction. Only by reading can we arm ourselves in this never-ending, sometimes, life-and-death struggle.

10. Some governments still oppose free and honest communication. The power of written ideas communicated through reading are the basis for “Freedom of the Press” Laws. It is unfortunate but true that Illiterate people are easier to control and manipulate than readers who are able discern good from bad in the written word. They also cannot do their own research and therefore their thinking can be manipulated. They must rely on what they are told and their emotions are swayed but what they hear. Interestingly, there is a good possibility that this was one of the main reasons why phonics was removed from our schools about 100 years ago.

Reading Is Important

11. Reading is important because words – spoken and written – directly impact the quality of our lives.  We are all the influenced from an early age by the words we hear or read. Many of the beliefs we have about ourselves are formed by words spoken to us, or at us, or read to us, or at us! What we can accomplish in our futures will depend on the words we believe about ourselves now. Not enough importance can be placed on the quality of the words we are exposed to. Some of those words are forced upon us, and others we choose ourselves. If you are not happy with yourself, change the words you are exposed to!  People, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words. Think about it.

According to Jonathan Kozol in “Illiterate America,” quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,'” the three main reasons people give for wanting to read are:

books1. To read the Bible,
2. To read books and newspapers, and
3. To help their children.

“I think everyone can conclude that reading is a vital skill! Reading Strategies are also a part of learning to read”.

By Glenn Davis,

Thank you Glenn!, and I totally agree!!

If you really like to dive into a movie series, or a specific topic, you should really look for it in written form. If you loved it on the big screen, you will enjoy getting a whole new perspective from the written version. Books allow for greater imagination, yours, when it comes to stories, plots and characters.
