Most are equipped with cameras and can now be controlled by your smartphone as opposed to the paddle controls of the past. The sizes are varied also. You can find a palm sized drone or a basketball sized drone, and sized in between. Prices vary as well from around $30 dollars to over a couple thousand dollars.

DRONE TERMINOLOGY: “Mini” means palm sized, “Intimidation” means basketball sized. Four propeller drones are “quadcopters”, “hexacopters” have six propellers and “octocopters” have eight propellers.

Flying Legal:

For most recreational purposes you are allowed to fly them under 400ft. You should not be flying them near Government Land or Buildings, or anything Military related, or near Airports.

This is a growing industry and an exciting one to be part of !! People everywhere are finding new uses for them everyday. I know of a farmer who uses a camera drone to check his crops. He can send it out quickly and without cost to check the last row of corn on his multi acre property. This saves him lots of money and time. Real Estate agents are using them more often to capture images to increase interest and sales in their listed properties. It is not unusual anymore to see a listing with a photo taken from an Ariel Drone. And as wild as it sounds both Google and Amazon are experimenting with Drone Delivery Vehicles. You could be the next person to come up with a clever use for drones based on what you need them to do for you!!

You should always be cautious, respectful and thoughtful when flying your drone. Keep in mind all the challenges a pilot faces keeping his plane safe in the air, and don’t add to those challenges. It is crucial to stay below 400 feet at all times, and to fly at least 5 miles from an airport. You should never fly your drone above crowds of people.

Regardless of your knowledge of a certain drone, you really should read your owner’s manual from cover to cover before taking out your drone. This can save you from making costly mistakes. Drone’s are not the same, and are not operated the same, every drone requires your research and basic or advanced operating instructions to ensure safe flight.

It is a good idea to start out with a small, and inexpensive drone, as beginners will be crashing a few times before they become experts. Don’t be discouraged, Drones are all pretty easy to operate, and you will learn to fly them well pretty quickly. Just takes a little time and practice. Two models here are able to withstand some crashes in grass without breaking, we recommend the UDI  and U818A. Once you have developed some skill and troubleshooting in air, you will be able to move up to the more advanced drones with earned confidence.
