It’s another sunny afternoon here in New Mexico, and I just flip flopped
to my front door and back to sign for my monthly delivery from Direct Cellars wine of the month club. Their monthly delivery is a very treasured gift I give myself and sometimes, others. I became a very surprised and delighted monthly customer of Direct Cellars Wine of the Month Club over six months ago. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what a good wine was. I was wrong. My previous experience was I think better than the average person. From waiting tables, I learned how to pair wines, pour wines, and purchase wines and yes, I can open a bottle of champagne like a pro. Of course the wines I paired and poured the most could be found in grocery store wine selection shelves. The wine experience I thought I had turned out to be no wine experience at all. In the six months of my monthly wine membership, I have received wines from Australia, Argentina, Chile, France, Italy, and Portugal. Every month I think I have received the best wine ever, sure to be my favorite wine and vineyard, until my next shipment arrives, and I have a new favorite !! I receive both red and white wine. One of my favorite white wines has come from Southeast Australia, it is called “Big Ripper” Chardonnay Big Rivers 2017 and has a surfer riding a large wave on the front of the bottle. It is a wonderful, well perfect really, Chardonnay. This one delivers notes of green apple and anjou pear, with a hint of kiwi and other green fruits. The flavors are balanced and the buttery finish is in a word – Perfect!
It is impossible to have a favorite red wine, but let me describe just two that my tastebuds consider extra special. Bright Willow Coteaux De Miramont Carignan 2016. The following description is taken from my tasting notes from Direct Cellars: “In Southeast France, close to the border of Spain, lies the incredibly picturesque city of Carcassonne.
It’s one of the most perfectly preserved medieval walled cities, and it’s surrounded by Carignan vineyards. This red grape is capable of producing wines that are amazingly complex, yet very easy to enjoy. “Carignan” is a classic varietal in southern France, and this version is a perfect example. Flavors of the region abound, with cooked blackberries, warm earth, and leather on both the nose and the palate. The medium levels of tannins make it easy to drink young, but we suggest decanting or aerating it first.”
The wines from our vineyards stateside are also EXCEPTIONAL !! For example, I just received Lazy Lab’s Bourbon Barrel Red California 2017. Most red wines are aged in traditional oak barrels. But today adventurous winemakers are putting their bold reds into barrels that were used for making Bourbon Whiskey!! . It is called “Cross-Aging” and the result is a whole new world of flavors and textures. This new trend in winemaking is very new, and Direct Cellars is way out in front in bringing it quickly to your table!! This following description was taken from the Wine Tasting Notes that I received with this wine. “The heavy inside charring of whisky barrels gives this exciting new wine a fascinating profile. The blend starts off with aromas of baked cherry pie, then piles on tons of vanilla, caramel, baking spices, and brown sugar. All those complex aromas follow right through on the palate, enhanced by mouth filing black current, soft tannins, and a seamless finish.”
